63rd Rally FIM – The Olive Tree Routes
The Institute Team for the World participates in the 63rd rally FIM, in Gialova, Messinia (July 2008), aiming at raising awareness and informing the participants on good environmental practices and of the highly environmental significance of the local environment, as in the region it is allocated the southern wetland of the Balkans, where migratory birds nest and reproduce. During the event, Team for the World will also have an executive role as it will be following up the recycling, water and energy saving schemes, as well as other the operation of other activities.
The environment is always in fashion
The Institute Team for the World in collaboration with the Greek Union of Environmentalist participated in the 3rd Athens Exclusive Designers Week with this slogan. The “Green Fashion Code” of good practice was presented, revealing the new tendencies towards a more sustainable fashion world. During the event, students from VAKALO School of Art & Design, created unique T-shirts that attracted the public’s interest.
Clima-net
The Institute Team for the World created the network Clima-net that aims to support the tourist stakeholders-businesses and the school communities with valuable information on the issues of climate change so that they go into action. In the website of Clima-net, there are given advices of how can the tourist industry become more sustainable, by minimising its carbon footprint. At the same time, the educational part of the program, concerning schools, gives the initiative to youngsters to think and act so that they decrease their impacts to the environment, particularly of those that intensify the climate changes.
More than 2.5 million acres of land were burned out
Institute Team for the World was present at the aforetime green alleys of Kaiafa, an area that was devastated during the fires of 2007 in Peloponnese. A big area of pine forests and evergreen trees was greatly impacted by the fires. However, our testimonial pictures attest that nature is being reborn.
2041 - Inspire Antarctica Expedition 5
Robert Swan, founder of the organisation 2041, organised the 5th mission in the Antarctica, in which the Chairman of the Institute Team for the World participated. The objective of the mission was to set in operation the first environmental education station in Antarctica and support the research teams that live there and study the climate changes. The particular mission had a great significance as the year 2007 during which the mission was organised, was named by the UN as the International Polar Year.
23rd & 24th International Athens Classic Marathon
The Institute Team for the World participated in the 23rd & 24th International Athens Classic Marathon, where in collaboration with “Coca Cola Hellas” created the voluntary team “Green Team” for the collection and recycling of plastic bottles that were used by the runners at the Marathon. Such an initiative proved that the world of sports can establish an environmentally friendly character just by adopting the adequate measures that contribute to its sustainability. Through this initiative, Team for the World aims at the continuation of this institution, also in other sport events, as well as at the growth of further actions.
The Great Warming
The Institute Team for the World brought to Greece the Canadian documentary “The Great Warming”, produced by STONEHAVEN and directed by Caren Sharof. It presents the causes of climate changes on the planet and their long-term implications and impacts on humanity. The documentary was filmed in eight countries, in four continents - Europe, USA, Asia, South America – showing the point of views of many world leading scientists. This impressive documentary was shown during the events for the World Day of Environment 2006 in Serres and was also projected in the ECOLIFE 2006 exhibition.
Green Belt Movement and the Kibera Community Youth Programme
As, the Institute Team for the World has being listed in the “Special Official Index” of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs for international developmental aid / Hellenic Aid, has supported through knowledge and skills in the field of environmental protection, natural disasters management and energy conservation, African community organizations such as the Green Belt Movement and the Kibera Community Youth Programme.
6th World Conference on Sport and Environment
UNEP and the International Olympic Committee organized the 6th World Conference on Sport and Environment in Nairobi, Kenya on November 2005, where 372 participants were brought together, amongst which Institute Team for the World. At the conference the connections between sport, peace and the environment were discussed meanwhile they focused on the environmental activities of the Olympic Movement and environmental efforts by organizers of major sport events. As such, they encouraged sport organizations to mainstream environmental issues in their activities.
During our staying in Nairobi, we had the opportunity to visit the UNEP leadership training programme for children from the Kibera Slums and Langata.
Green Sport
The institute Team for the World established the program “Green.Sport” in order to promote the youth’s participation into sports, but also of that of the wider public, through initiatives that are linked with other organisations’ actions such as UNESCO, UNEP and the European Committee. Green.Sport is an attempt that embraces sports along with education, environmental protection, fair play and fight against poverty within the framework of actions that has been built up by international organisations.
